Opening Hearts was born out of a strong commitment to help children with special and their families lead a rich, fuller life. Opening Hearts aims to help create communities free of barriers that limit any child from reaching his or her full potential in life. A keen awareness and commitment to our core values and our target audience help to keep us focused on our mission.
Our Target Audience
Parents and Families
The challenges that a family with a child with special needs deal with can be overwhelming. The financial, emotional and psychological toll can be very heavy. Opening Hearts aims to lessen the load on families by offering insights, encouragement and hope. By sharing stories and demonstrating possibilities, we want to empower families and help them maximize the quality of everyday life for everyone.
Educators and Health Care Professionals
Opening Hearts aims to help educators and health care professionals better understand the challenges that families face, to see what families experience after school or between visits. By doing so, we hope that even better policies and programs can be developed to help these children make the transition through the various stages of development and healing.
Service and Support Providers
By highlighting the power of inclusion and its impact on the child, their classmates and society over all, we hope to encourage service providers to increase their willingness and capacity to embrace inclusive practices. We also hope that by showing the exemplary practices of inclusion and service integration by some municipalities, that this will encourage other communities to follow suit.
The General Public
The stories of the challenges and triumphs of children with special needs and their families can be inspiring to many people. We hope to encourage everyone to embrace diversity and the differences in others. We also hope that by seeing the possibilities and gifts of these children, the community will focus on capabilities, not disabilities.
